You Victorians

” … it’s on Castlereagh Street,” I said.

Louise laughed, “Oh, you Victorians.”

“What?”

“It’s Castlereagh,” she said.

“Huh?”

“It’s your accent. So Melbourne. “

I laughed. “Didn’t I say it right?”

“It’s Castlereagh.”

I heard no difference and I said so.

“Oh, you and your Victorian accent,” she laughed and waved me away.

Yes, there are quite distinct regional accents. It’s the aahs and the ehhhs, apparently. Louise tells me she knows a Melbournian by the vowels.  I still can’t tell the difference between NSW-lian and Victorian, but a Queenslander is easy to ‘spot’.
